The Haloween Comet |
|
|
This pattern works great for both Salmon and Steelhead, I would say pinks and chums love it the most. It's based off of the comet which has many variants, mainly the way the body is tied. I prefer the diamond braind because of the different angle flash it provides and the fuller body. The Tail is based of the Orange Boss pattern whichis back/orange/black and the tail should be posted to give just a tiny bit more action and track water a little better, this is a whole other conversation. To tie this the tyer will need (hook and eyes are prefrence):
Mount the hook into the vise and wrap from the eye to the bend in the hook, if wieght is wanted weight it now.
Select some Calftail with the length of the shank, hold by the tips and pull the short hairs out through the bottom, no need for stacking or triming for length, the excess will be tied into the body. After the hair is cleaned out of all shorter hairs hold to the top of the shank.
Give is a good five wrap of thread while continuing to pinch and hold to the shank.
Bring the thread forward and back securing the hairs to the shank and forming a nice under body.
Next grab the tail and lift upwards bring the thread around the base of the hair about six times, this should of left the tail posted stick upwards.
Now secure the post by a couple wraps before and after, the tail should be stick upwards now at the most a 45° angle.
Take the diamond braid and pinch the tip around the thread and slide up to desired postition. and secure.
It is alright to tie the diamond braind down all the way to the eye, this will give the body some more bulk.
Wrap the daimond braid toward the eye, with very small overlaps, making sure to stretch just a tad so the daimond braind is tight and secure.
Tie in your hackle, I prefer base first on this pattern, but tip first will leave the shorter fibers behind the longer hackle. I do oppisite just for a more duarable pattern. The tyer should note that this pattern is constructed to be beat on.
Wrap the hackle foraward bringing each wrap nice and tight to the next.
Tie down and give a whip finish to secure that the hackle won't come loose. If the tyer is not using eyes. this would be the end.
Tie in the bead chain eyes.
Give the head a finish of dubbing for looks, whip finish after the last of dubbing.
And a drop of super glue to secure all the thread holding the eyes on.
This is a very mean dredger, and can be fished all day without worry of materials falling apart. Great pattern for early low water winter fishing.
